Cultural Speakers

Cultural practices, beliefs, and norms play a very important role not only in delivering health care to clients and patients, but also in how that health care is received and what outcomes are possible. Diversity within those beliefs and practices, and as a result of available resources or social economic/demographic circumstances, must be fully understood in order for health care professionals to provide the best care possible no matter where they are in the world, or what culture they are practicing within.

At GOLD Perinatal Care, we understand the importance of Culture and Diversity in health care, and we are working hard to bring you speakers and presentations from around the world that will help you understand the patients and clients you are working with. Discovering how health care is provided and received in other countries and cultures around the world can have a positive impact on our own professional practice. Given that culture is defined by much more than political borders, GOLD Perinatal Care invites speakers to share their knowledge and expertise about perinatal health care from a geographically-based focus or a people-group focus from within a particular set of beliefs, lifestyle or minority. Mehrad Bastani

Mehrad Bastani is an assistant professor at Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, Center of Health Innovation and Outcome Research (CHIOR). Before joining Feinstein, he served three years as a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Biomedical Data Science at Stanford University as a member of Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network (CISNET). He received his undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2011, MSc in Industrial Engineering from University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran, in 2013, and the Ph.D. degree Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, University of Miami in 2017. During the past nine years, Mehrad has participated in multiple projects funded by AFOSR, NIH, and NCI. His research interests span the area of Data-Driven Simulation and Optimization, Medical Decision-Making, Decision Science, and Healthcare Delivery.

Nobuyuki Yoshiyasu

Dr. Nobuyuki Yoshiyasu is a thoracic surgeon, who specializes in minimally invasive procedures for lung cancer and lung transplantation. He believes that patient- and family-centered care should be a surgeon’s priority. Every cancer patient and their family are different, with their own unique needs. His goal is to provide the medical care that they want and to achieve the best outcome possible. Dr. Yoshiyasu is also a postgraduate student at the University of Tokyo in Japan and has worked on developing radiomics and artificial intelligence in lung cancer screening.
