Cultural Speakers

Cultural practices, beliefs, and norms play a very important role not only in delivering health care to clients and patients, but also in how that health care is received and what outcomes are possible. Diversity within those beliefs and practices, and as a result of available resources or social economic/demographic circumstances, must be fully understood in order for health care professionals to provide the best care possible no matter where they are in the world, or what culture they are practicing within.

At GOLD Perinatal Care, we understand the importance of Culture and Diversity in health care, and we are working hard to bring you speakers and presentations from around the world that will help you understand the patients and clients you are working with. Discovering how health care is provided and received in other countries and cultures around the world can have a positive impact on our own professional practice. Given that culture is defined by much more than political borders, GOLD Perinatal Care invites speakers to share their knowledge and expertise about perinatal health care from a geographically-based focus or a people-group focus from within a particular set of beliefs, lifestyle or minority. Aakash Desai

Dr. Desai is a hematology-oncology fellow at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. He holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and a certification in Health Professions Education from the University of Connecticut. He also serves as a secretary for the Minnesota State Medical Association Resident and Fellow Section. Dr. Desai is the recipient of a 2021 Young Investigator Award from Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation and the 2021 IASLC Early Career Award. He serves as the social media editor for JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics (@ASCO_pubs) and is an active member of the ASCO Trainee and Early Career Council. His professional interests include evidence base in oncology, clinical trials, drug development, cancer care quality, and health care delivery. He is also one of the founding members of the grassroots consortium focusing on COVID-19 in patients with cancer now known as the COVID19 and Cancer Consortium (CCC19; @COVID19nCCC). Bill Mayfield

Dr. Mayfield is a practicing Thoracic Surgeon, and serves as the Chief Surgical Officer of the WellStar Health System in the metro Atlanta area. He has been instrumental in the development of minimally invasive cardiac and minimally invasive thoracic surgery. He is a co-founder and director of the lung screening program, incidental lung nodule program, and multi-disciplinary thoracic oncology clinics at Wellstar. He is co-founder if the Georgia Lung Cancer Round Table, and manner of the National Lung Cancer Round Table. He is vice-chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the GO2 Lung Cancer Foundation.
