Stephen G. Swisher
Dr. Swisher heads the Division of Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is on the executive leadership team of the lung cancer initiative in MD Anderson’s Moon Shots Program™ — the boldest-ever research effort to dramatically reduce deaths to cancer.
After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, where he completed dual bachelor’s degrees with distinction in history and biology, Dr. Swisher earned his medical degree from the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine. There he garnered Surgery Honors and the Lange Publications Award. He completed a general surgery residency and a fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center, where he received the Golden Scalpel Chief Resident Award for outstanding teaching. He also served as a surgery registrar as part of his residency at the University of Nottingham in Nottingham, England.
Dr. Swisher’s assumed his first academic appointment at UCLA Medical Center as a clinical instructor in the Division of Surgery. He came to Houston in 1994 for a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at MD Anderson and St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital/Texas Heart Institute, focusing on thoracic surgical oncology. In 1996 he joined MD Anderson’s faculty as assistant professor in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He has continually risen through the faculty ranks, achieving associate professor in 2001 and early promotion to professor in 2005. He became chair of his department after a national search in 2007 and was awarded the Robert F. Fly Professorship of Surgical Oncology. In 2014, following a highly competitive national search, he was named head of the Division of Surgery and awarded the Charles A. LeMaistre Distinguished Chair in Thoracic Oncology.
Dr. Swisher is repeatedly listed among the top doctors and surgeons in Texas and the nation. Other accolades include the Resident Clinical Teaching Award from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, which honored his dedication to educating the next generation of cancer experts.
An author of more than 430 peer-reviewed publications who is on the review board of multiple surgical and oncology journals such as Lancet Oncology, World Journal of Surgical Oncology and The Annals of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Swisher is internationally recognized for his pioneering gene therapy clinical trials in lung and esophageal cancer using adenovirus-p53 and adenovirus-TNFα. His current translational research efforts focus on developing a novel small molecule lung cancer treatment (Stat-3 inhibitor oncrasin-72) and on revealing the prognostic and therapeutic role of the PKR/eIF2α biomarker. His research has been supported by the Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute (NCI).
Dr. Swisher is a member of numerous professional organizations and has served on many national and institutional committees. He is currently a member of the Lung Committee in SWOG (an NCI-supported cancer clinical trial cooperative group), a member of the Lung Cancer Working Group of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, a d an ALCHEMIST Core Committee member for NCI’s Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program.

Khaled AlKattan
Prof. Khaled Al-Kattan, Dean College of Medicine, Alfaisal University and Consultant Thoracic Surgery and lung transplant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre. He was a graduate from King Saud University 1983, got his FRCS from Edinburgh with a gold medal in 1988. Appointed as an assistance professor at KSU in 1989, Associate professor in 1995 and then a full professor in 2000. He served as the director of continuous medical education at the college. He was a co-founder of both the Saudi thoracic society and Pan Arab Chest Society. He is the Middle East regent for the European Society of Thoracic Surgery. He is a member of many international societies as IASLC and sits as a senior editor for the Annals of Thoracic Medicine journal. He is in the editorial board and reviewer of most of the international thoracic surgery journals. Have extensive research and publication in his field, presented many abstracts in international symposiums. Was invited as an international speaker in many medical events. He is the founder of the National Lung Cancer Study Group and the national lung transplant program. Have contributed to public health education and establishment of several charity medical associations.
