Sara McLaughlin-Barrett

Sara McLaughlin-Barrett has been a Lung Oncology Clinical Nurse Consultant for the past 10 years, and is currently working at Monash Health in Melbourne, Australia. She has worked in both the public and private sectors, with a strong focus in the work up to diagnosis and surgery of thoracic malignancies.
Sara has an expertise and passion for improving service delivery and patient outcomes. She has been involved in service redesign and independently developed Australia’s first cancer support mobile application ‘My Cancer Pal’ in 2016.
Sara sat on the Management Advisory Committee of the Australasian Lung cancer Trials Group (ALTG) for 3 years, and is the nurse representative on the Thoracic Oncology Group Australasia (TOGA) management committee, as well as a committee member for the Nurses and Allied Health Professionals committee for the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC).

Raphael Bueno

Dr. Raphael Bueno is the Chief of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He completed his medical training at Harvard Medical School and MIT’s Health Sciences and Technology program. He subsequently trained in General Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the BWH Thoracic Faculty in 1996. He was promoted to the rank of Professor of Surgery in 2011 and was appointed Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery in 2014. In 2017 Dr. Bueno was promoted to the Frederic G Levin Distinguished Chair of Thoracic Surgery and Lung Cancer Research at BWH. In 2021, Dr. Bueno was named Chief of the newly formed Division of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery.

Dr. Bueno’s main research interests center on the molecular events that lead to malignancy in mesothelioma and lung cancer. Specifically, Dr. Bueno focuses on developing and fine-tuning biomarkers for diagnosis, prognostis and prediction in these cancers. His research also includes tumor sequencing of Mesothelioma and identification of targetable pathways.
Dr. Bueno’s research has been funded by the NCI for over 15 years is also funded by the DOD as well as several pharmacological and device companies. His lab’s molecular research is closely integrated with the tumor bank.

Clinically and administratively, Dr. Bueno supervises a division of 21 thoracic surgeons and 6 cardiac surgeons who work at the BWH and 5 additional network hospital performing nearly 5,000 general thoracic surgical cases of all types per year. In addition, he is the surgical director of the BWH Lung Center and a co-director of the Lung Research Center. His personal surgical practice is focused on cancer surgery including mesothelioma, lung and esophageal cancer. He performs approximately 350 operations per year and actively participates in resident education and mentorship.

Leena Gandhi

Dr. Gandhi is a thoracic oncologist focused on early drug development and currently leads the Center for Cancer Therapeutic Innovation at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). She received her PhD from University of California, Berkeley and her MD from New York University School of Medicine. After fellowship training at DFCI/MGH, she was a faculty member in the Thoracic Oncology Program and Early Drug Development Center at DFCI focused on immuno-oncology and biomarkers of response. She served as Director of Thoracic Medical Oncology at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center from 2016-2018 and led immmuno-oncology development at Eli Lilly prior to returning to DFCI in 2020.

Rina Hui

Rina Hui is a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney and a Senior Medical Oncologist at the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre, Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia with a clinical and research focus on lung and breast cancers. After completing her medical degree at The University of Sydney and specialist training at The Royal North Shore Hospital, Rina undertook translational research on cyclin D1-cdk4/6-p16INK4a-pRb pathway in breast cancer at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and was awarded a PhD degree. She currently serves as Co-Chair of Oncology Block at the University of Sydney. She is involved in the development of the new oncology curriculum, serves on the written examination committee for the Sydney Medical School and previously served on the written examination committee for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for 7 years until 2019. She is the Head of Clinical Trials at the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute, a member of the clinical advisory board and research advisory committee of the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute, a member of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia Expert Group for lung cancer, a member of the Breast Cancer Trials and the Australasian Lung Cancer Trials Group. She was a member of the Immuno-Oncology Program Committee for World Conference for Lung Cancer 2018 and currently serves as a member of the ESMO 2021 scientific committee. Rina is principal investigator on many clinical trials, including phase I as well as many landmark practice-changing clinical studies of immunotherapy and targeted therapies in lung and breast cancers resulting in publications in highly ranked journals.

Medical degree as physician at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Peruana Federico Villarreal (UNFV) and graduated from his residency of Medical Oncology at the INEN. Was Chief of Clinical Research Departament and Principal of Medical Oncology Departament at INEN.
Strongly dedicated to research, he is focused in clinical and translational medicine in the area of thoracic oncology.

Jae Kim

Jae Y. Kim, M.D., chief of thoracic surgery, joined City of Hope after completing a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery, specializing in thoracic oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

A Harvard graduate in biochemistry, Dr. Kim received his medical degree from University of California San Francisco.

Dr. Kim is heavily involved in research to find better treatments for lung and esophageal cancer. He has led multiple clinical trials to improve the care of lung and esophageal cancer patients, focusing on surgical outcomes and quality of life.

Huanhuan Chen

Prof. Huanhuan Joyce Chen graduated with PhD at Cornell University, and did post-doctoral training with Dr. Harold Varmus at Weill Cornell Medicine. She joins University of Chicago as assistant professor in 2020 as a K99/R00 awardee and has many papers published in Nature Biotech, Nature Med, Cell Stem Cell, JEM and JCI etc. Her lab is focused on modeling and studying lung cancers using stem cell-derived cells.

Lisa Burgess

Dr. Burgess is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who has worked in the field for 15 years and with the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital System for 13. Dr. Burgess received her doctorate in clinical psychology with an emphasis on health at Arizona State University. She completed an APA accredited internship and fellowship at the Palo Alto VA. The first was in the field of geropsychology with an emphasis on the intersection of aging and health, and the second was in health psychology. After working in the private sector for two years, Dr. Burgess rejoined the VA first working in blind rehabilitation with the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System and then moving to Phoenix in 2013 as the Health Behavior Coordinator. In this role she works on health promotion/disease prevention efforts throughout the hospital and trains providers, nurses, and other medical team members on effective patient communication and motivational interviewing. Dr. Burgess also serves as the medical center’s Tobacco Cessation Lead Clinician coordinating support resources for tobacco cessation and chairing related policy committees for the hospital
